Good Government

The criteria for a government vary depending upon the point of view critic takes. This is trying to discuss the functionality of a good government, dealing primarily with an advanced society only.

First of all, the government should be established legitimately. To be elected with the constitution and the laws of the country, is the fundamental requirement in the process of establishing government. Although this does not sufficiently make a government good, however, a government titled with “good” should not be challenged on its legitimacy.

A good government need to be organized to efficiently realize the proposed functions. The efficiency means to act timely and effectively with less as possible financial consumption.

The functions of a good government should meet its legitimate objectives. “Good government was the one who most effectively secures the rights of the people and the rewards of their labour, which promotes their happiness, and also does their will”. Thomas Jefferson (as cited in Wikipedia, this page was last modified on 6 April 2013 as 02:31). Partially detailing his arguments, I believe a good government should promote the realization of liberty, equality, dignity and justice from its role in the society.

Common people focus the government more on the public products it provides. Thus, it is essential to provide necessary public products such as safety, education, public transportation, health services, etc. to fulfil the people’s demands. A good government should not ingratiate voters with lavish welfare but takes into account both the long-term and immediate interests of the people.

A good government should understand thoroughly the complexity of the society it serves and of the world, to design and to implement proper policies both internal and diplomatic.
