 第二十三章
 
【原文】
希言自然。故飘风不终朝,骤雨不终日。孰为此者,天地。天地尚不能久,而况于人乎。故从事于道者,同于道;德者,同于德;失者,同于失。同于道者,道亦乐得之;同于德者,德亦乐得之;同于失者,失亦乐得之。信不足焉,有不信焉。
 
【译文】
不言政令少扰民是合乎自然的,所以再大的狂风也刮不过一个早上,再大的暴雨也下不了一整天。谁制造的狂风暴雨呢?是天地。兴风起雨尚且不能持久,何况人呢?所以从事于道的,就同于道;从事于德的,就同于德;失道失德的,行为就是暴戾恣肆。凡是同于道的人,道也会乐于得到他;凡是同于德的人,德也乐于得到他;凡是同于失道失德的,就会得到失道失德的后果。统治者的诚信不足,人民自然不会相信他。
 
English Translation

To speak little is natural.
High winds will not howl the entire morning;
A downpour will not last the entire day.
Who is behind the wind and the rain?
Heaven and earth.
Even heaven and earth cannot last long;
How can humanity?
Therefore, those who follow Tao identify with Tao;
Those who have virtue identify with virtue;
Those who are lost identify with loss.
Tao accepts those who identify with Tao;
Virtue welcomes those who identify with it;
Loss embraces those who identify with it.
Distrust is due to lack of faith.
