Into the blue the billows of spring river fly;
O with the tidal waves the bright moon rises high.
Its glorious glow surfs the waves thousands of miles,
Which how could any spring stream miss out neath the sky?
Through meadows the river weaves with its lively flow,
Over trees and flowers the moonlight glows like snow,
In the air it seems flowing frost yet motionless,
On the shoals it merges with white sands high and low.
The sky and river share the same hue, bright and clear;
In the vast blue, alone hangs high a shining sphere.
Who began to behold it first along the shores?
When did it begin to shine, and in which year?
Generations of mankind come and come again;
The River and moon year by year the same remain.
Albeit no way of knowing whom the moon awaits,
Man watches the river roll on with might and main.
Lo, drifting, drifting white clouds fare forth beyond town;
Her grief upon grief weighs the Green-Maple-Shore down.
Who would be floating in his boat alone tonight?
Where would his Bright-Moon-Bower in her yearning drown?
?
The moon lingers in sympathy above her bower,
It shines on her dressing table each passing hour.
Her brocade curtain fails to roll its sheen away,
Her beetle-stone flips it, yet it flips back with power.
Right now, Jack and Jill, tho’ apart, watch the same moon,
And would fain ride its beam to shine each other soon.
Wild geese can fly, yet not as fast as the moonlight;
Fish can leap forth, but only ripples wilt balloon.
Last night, in dream, the pondside flowers fell to rest;
Spring hath half lapsed, yet home still so far; so depressed.
The river takes spring further and further away,
Above the pond, the moon again sinks towards west.
Into the ocean of brume, the moon begins to dip;
Betwixt Jack and Jill lies an endless road of trip.
Oh how many souls could journey home by moonlight,
While the leafy river feels the moon’s tender grip?
