What does chiropractic have to do with lung function? Good question. This is the exact topic of several scientific research studies currently taking place all around the world. We have known for almost 100 years that lung function improves with chiropractic care. More specifically, we have seen clinically that kids who are under chiropractic care breathe easier, use less steroid inhaler medication, and have fewer if any asthma attacks. Scientific research into the cause of this correlation is pointing to the role that the nerves play in lung function.
The nerves in your spine control the function of EVERY part of your body (including the lungs)... so if the nerves to a specific part of the body are pinched (called a subluxation), that part of the body will not work at 100%. Simple. So here's the question: what do they call it when the nerves to the lungs are not turned on 100%? The answer: asthma.
In a recent study by the Michigan Chiropractic Council (MCC), a panel of doctors performed an outcome assessment study to test the qualitative and quantitative effectiveness of chiropractic care on children with asthma. More than 500 parents called to get their child involved in the chiropractic study.
The study examined the chiropractic effectiveness in correcting the cause of asthma in patients from birth to age 17. The average age of the participant was 10 years. "After 30 days of chiropractic health care, patients averaged less than one attack, whereas prior to the study they were experiencing more than four attacks per month," said Dr. Bob Graham, who directed the study. "Medications, which can be costly, were decreased by nearly 70 percent! Finally, patient satisfaction was rated 8.5 on a scale of 10." (Author's note: In my experience these numbers are modest. Of the dozens of children with asthma currently under care in our office, only 2 have even had an attack in the past 6 months.)
So, is chiropractic care a treatment for asthma? No. Just like it's not a treatment for back pain, headaches, digestive disease, ear infections or infertility either! Chiropractic care, very simply, is a natural form of health care designed to elevate your overall level of health. And, when we are healthier, we get fewer symptoms like asthma, back pain, ear infections, etc.
