为什么方鸿渐不移民？

《围城》讲了一批三十年代海龟们的故事。小说的开头是方鸿渐及一批留欧的毕业生们乘船回国，To stay or not to stay 好象从来就没成一个话题。

那个时候的中国同发达国家之间的差距，跟八十年代中国再度打开国门时应该是相差无几吧？但留学生们不管是公费还是自费，大多都学成归国了。我在想，那时的人们大概道德观念或契约精神比现在的人强，公派的花了国家的钱，自当回国效力（还逢日本侵略中国）；自费的呢，家境殷实，回国当然舒服许多、施展才华的机会也大许多。其它的原因，我在猜那时的移民政策也许相当地严厉，种族的歧视也可能相当地严重。

今日大家讨论回国还是不回国，最根本的原因还是祖国经济上变得强大了。如果问问八十年代的留学生，当时多数都是想怎么才能留下来。
